An art exhibition in Cordoba.

I have always heard a lot of good things about art exhibitions in Argentina but I have never had an opportunity to go to one. Some art exhibitions are quite formal and you have to dress up. On an opening night they might even serve food and champagne. If you are an art lover it is quite an experience to go to one, I am told.

When Andrey and I recently went to Cordoba city we got the opportunity to go to an informal art exhibition. Sometimes the artist is there and you can meet him/her. I find that Sundays are the best to visit museums and art exhibitions. The city is quiet and you have plenty of time to admire the exhibits without being rushed.

There are regular places for art exhibitions and if you are new to the city just look out for the signs. Normally there is an exhibit inside the “Paseo del Buen Pastor” building in Cordoba city. That is where Andrey and I went.

Entrance is free but it is always good manners in Argentina to ask for permission to look at the art. The art on the first floor was done by an artist called Marcel Fuentes. Luckily it was not modern art because I am not a huge fan. The paintings were exquisite and I liked it.

We wondered around for some time and eventually made our way to the 2nd floor. The building is very modern with huge glass windows and even a glass panelled floor. I did not like the idea of walking on the glass panel and quickly made my way through to the art section.

What awaited me there? Modern art. It was really weird art. I mean really weird. You know the times when you have to turn your head 45 degrees, shake your head and turn it 45 degrees the other way? Well, that is how I had to do it. Some pieces I found very interesting, actually more intriguing and others were just plain hideous. I am sure I could make something similar and call it art!

That is the thing about artists in Argentina. There are no rules and in the name of ´free spirit´ anything goes and it is accepted. Surprisingly we had a lot of fun in this section. We kept on calling each other to an interesting piece and then giggled like naughty children who have seen a condom for the first time.

All you need is a good imagination!

“It is not hard to understand modern art. If it hangs on a wall it’s a painting, and if you can walk around it it’s a sculpture.”

  1. creatively comes in many forms and for the artist, that's how the express theirs. Some are great work.

  2. Oh wonderful Nelieta! My dad often takes me to an art exhibit whenever possible and critique different art styles. My art mentor and I would often reflect on modern art's tendency towards abstraction and he'd warn me when my art style leads me to this. I like, for example, Picasso's and Van Gogh's…but the rest, oh well…Pollock's abstract expressionism is good for play but then again it's like looking at this artwork and never coming to conclusion what it is all about.I like the photos you took. I saw a bit of the artworks… Thanks for including everything. The museum looks huge…WOW!I'd like to visit it too one day but for now, let me enjoy the photos you shared. Thanks Nelieta :*

  3. Champagne and art – that's just the perfect combination! 🙂 Call me old-fashioned, but most times modern art just goes over my head and can be emotionally distant. And as you've said, some are just "hideous". :))

  4. some interesting pieces ..I found it fascinating that they let you photograph them, The ones I have seen would not let you photograph the art, mainly paintings. I love seeing the masters they were amazing when it came to painting the light. Rembrandt lighting is used by portrait photographers to this day.Jim

  5. Hi Melissa, thank you very much for your nice comment! What I have seen from your art…it is beautiful! I am not an art expert but I know what I like and what I don´t. Some of the modern art really does not appeal to me at all.I think it is important for an artists to express himself but there needs to be a a balance.I will write about my visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam 🙂 You will enjoy it because I also like his work!

  6. Nelieta, I love looking at art no matter what kind it is. Everything to me is someone's creation, imagination. As you said tho, some you just want to giggle at as you have absolutely no clue as to what was in their mind when they came up with it. I love your reference to 'first time seeing a condom'…I can just see you and a group of adults acting like a bunch of teenagers, lol.

  7. to each, her own! great tour. wow! argentinians have such manners. i cannot imagine anyone asking to look at the art in NYC. p.s. art openings are fun but, most of the time, a little silly.

  8. Hi Jim, the art exhibition was not in a museum, so I think they did not care too much. Other big museums in Argentina don´t allow photographs and I can understand that.Interesting fact about the light…I didn´t know that!

  9. Hi Mary, sorry I missed this comment! You are so right! Art comes in many different forms and not all people like the same thing. We did have a lot of fun looking at all the different items on display. Some were really good and others did not appeal to me at all 🙂
