An underwater sea walk in Mauritius.

In my opinion the Underwater sea walk in Mauritius is one of the most unique experiences when visiting the island. It is a great opportunity for people who have never dived before, or who are claustrophobic like me, to experience magnificent marine life, fauna and corals in the ocean.

Mauritius is the best place for an underwater sea walk.

I was terrified to go on this excursion. First of all I get seasick and I am very claustrophobic. I cannot imagine putting my head down in the water and not being able to breath on my own. My friend really wanted to go and although the guide explained the whole procedure, I was still not convinced. I really wanted to do it but I was scared. In the end I decided to go and see if I could conquer my fear. I am so glad I did!

We were transferred with a motorboat from the centre of Grand Baie to a platform situated inside the lagoon at the North of Mauritius. The water was very calm and luckily I didn´t get seasick! We were fitted with a diving suite, shoes and a weight belt. We received a pre departure lecture about the gear, safety procedures, the local marine life and the walking trail itself.

It was time! They put a helmet with a glass screen over my head. It is open at the bottom and you can put your hand inside. From the top oxygen are pumped into the bowl (you always stay connected to the boat) and you can breath on your own once down in the water. I had to climb down the ladder and that was when I started to panic! I refused to go down and used all my strength to hold onto the boat. The guide quickly grabbed me and took the fish bowl (that is what I called it) of my head.

The guide was so good. He talked to me and told me that pregnant women can go down and even little children. I don´t have to be afraid. The second time round it was easier. I went down.

At first I did panic! I started to breath heavily and once I realized that I could breath on my own I was fine. In any case by this time I didn´t care any more because what I´ve seen in front of my eyes was spectacular! I have never seen anything so beautiful (apart from when my little girls were born!).

Breathing on my own but still clinging to the helmet

Here time stops, worries fade and breathing underwater becomes possible!

The corals and sea life is amazing!

You actually walk on the bottom of the ocean. It is not very deep +- 3 to 4m. They say this is what it must feel like to walk on the moon. I couldn´t believe all the fish, corals and fauna. We bought an underwater camera and the guide took photos of us while we were admiring everything. These guys are really good. They show you interesting plants and they give you bread to feed the fish.

An amazing underwater sea walk in Mauritius.

This was amazing! When you hold the piece of bread in your hand the fish flock around you and eat from your hand. The walk lasted about 25 minutes. It was one of the best excursions I have ever taken in my life.

Unbelievable what you can see on an underwater sea walk in Mauritius!

Back on the boat I couldn´t thank the guide enough. He smiled proudly and told me I gave him quite a scare. I highly recommend an underwater sea walk in Mauritius to travellers who are looking for an adventure.

An underwater sea walk in Mauritius

I have been fortunate to have done quite a bit of travelling. By heart I am an adventurer and I love exploring new places, cultures and food. Travelling can become stressful and expensive. Over the years I have learnt to travel as cost effective as possible, simply by travelling more clever. Nelmitravel.com is a Adventure and Budget Travel site where I review Airlines, Accommodation, Transport, Restaurants and give helpful travel information.

  1. Mauritius overall is a beautiful place but quite pricey. Had some students who told me that i should visit but be prepared to pay quite a bit.

  2. We stayed on the East Coast of Mauritius (La Palmar). It is not as popular as the north coast (which is very pricey). The East coast is a little more windy and the beaches not very long. But we had a great hotel and it suited the budget! I would shop around before I book. It is an awesome holiday and there is a lot to do.

  3. OMGGGGGGGGG I was holding my breathhhhhhh…..this is AMAZING……I wanna do it LOLOLOL…As always….XOXOXOXO

  4. Wow! Nelieta that was must have been awesome. I have always been fascinated by the underwater world. Would love to experience it someday. I think we get to do this even in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

  5. Looks amazing but I think I would be terrified – I remember snorkling for the first time but still being close to the surface. I don't know that I would want to be that far away from it.

  6. Hi SJ, believe me I was terrified to go down there. You will see in all the photos that I am holding the helmet. Once I realized that I could breath I was ok. But it took a lot of guts to go down 🙂

  7. Hi Rimly, if you get an opportunity to do it, please do! It is magnificent! I cannot even begin to explain what I have seen 🙂

  8. That is the coolest thing! I had never seen anything like that before! What an amazing way to explore the ocean and all of its wonders! I think it's great that people as young as 7 years can do it! Out of curiousity…how much US dollars is 38 euros equivalent to?…Not trying to quiz you, just wondering how expensive such a venture is!

  9. For a lady who was scared to death you look like you are having the time of your life under the sea in Mauritius. 🙂 How lucky you are.xoxoJessica

  10. Nelieta, my hat of to you girl! I'm not sure I would have been able to do that. I have an exceptional fear of water! The view is breathtaking though and once you were down there it sounds like it was all worth it:)Thanks for sharing! Beautiful photos.

  11. OMG! OMG! OMG! I just love this one Nelieta! And what an experience you had…. I wouldn't be able to do that though although how much I really wanted to try it…Awesome experience! Cheers to you! Bravo!

  12. Hi Jessica M, yes this is something that the whole family can participate in. It is something incredible and I am so glad I did it. Although not very deep you still see incredible things. I used the currency converter and 38 Euros is 54 USD. Expensive but if you compare it to the gondola ride (80 Euros) then this is far better!

  13. It is strange, I am a scuba diver but when I read this I thought 'oh no!'. The whole concept boggles my mind, yet give me aqua lungs and I am fine. You are very brave – and your courage paid off.

  15. What an adventure! I'm not sure I would have gone down or not. I think you probably have to be there to make the decision. Your photos are wonderful.

  16. Hi Nancie, thank you! I must say I was the only one on the boat who had problems to go down. Luckily we all have a choice in life and nobody is forcing us to do something against our will 🙂

  18. Hi Kerry-Ann, I have never done scuba diving before. That also sounds like a lot of fun! I have done snorkeling, which I have enjoyed but I found I got dizzy after a while 🙁 Thanks, I am so glad I went down to have a look 🙂

  19. Thanks Bret! The little buggers have teeth and they even try to eat your fingers! The camera caught it nicely!

  21. Hi Jessica B, I was really scared but got over it as soon as I saw how beautiful it was. Unfortunately my fear of small spaces caught up with me in Egypt and I couldn´t go down the Pyramid of Giza.

  23. Hi Jorie, it was quite an experience! The most difficult part was to go down into the water. I panicked big time. But once I let go it was incredible. I would do it again!

  26. Hi Nelieta! What an experience that is, yeah! 🙂 That is definitely something I wish I could do myself in the future.. Do you need to be able to swim to do that? Cos I do not know how to swim but I so wanted to do that too.. 🙂

    1. Hi Jorie, so nice to see you here again! I am sure you would 🙂 No, you don`t have to be able to swim. You basically walk on the bottom of the ocean and it is not that deep but deep enough 🙂 The tank that they put over your head is quite heavy and they also tie weights around your waist. Have a great day Jorie!

Thank you for visiting. Have a fabulous day!
