Why choosing your seat before you fly.

When it comes to flying, everyone has their own preference where they want to sit. Did you know that not all seats on the plane are created equal? The obvious step is to book your ticket but many people wait until the last minute before selecting a seat. Chances are that most of the good seats are already taken by then.

Choosing your seat when you book.

Many airlines allow you to book your seat in advance. Most of the time the airline will try to accommodate you if you have reserved your seat before the time. I like to sit close to the emergency exit but that is a very difficult seat to book. No harm in asking when you check-in though!

Choosing your seat before you fly is easier than ever. There are a couple of websites that can help to make your flight experience comfortable. My favorites are SeatGuru and Seat Expert. Like I have mentioned previously, not all seats are created equal. Passengers have the option to rate their seats after a flight and this information is extremely valuable for other travellers. All you need to know is the type of airplane that you are flying with and the airline. Seats are divided into different categories:

  • Above average;
  • Mixed reviews;
  • Below average;
  • Beware.

A map will appear with a layout of the airplane and seats. Seats marked in green are above average and those are the ones that you ideally would like to choose. The ones in red are the ones that you need to avoid. Why? Based on statistics these seats are situated in heavy traffic areas, close to restrooms, restricted recline or seat subject to increased contact from isle.

What your choice of plane seat says about your personality.

Why do some people prefer the window seat and others the aisle? Does it say something about your personality? A survey conducted among frequent flyers have revealed interesting information. Flying is stressful and by choosing your seat you exert some control or power over this stressful environment.

If you choose a window seat then it could mean that you value your privacy. The solid wall separates you from another person. Most important you don`t have to move every time somebody wants to visit the toilet! You can also rest your head on the wall and sleep.

Choosing an aisle seat means you can stretch your legs without disturbing your next door neighbor. This is also the ideal seat if you like to exert power. You basically have control over other passengers because they have to ask you to get up when they want to visit the bathroom.

It could also mean that you are an introvert and do not like to be surrounded by people. It is the ideal seat for a person who suffers from claustrophobia.

I have been fortunate to have done quite a bit of travelling. By heart I am an adventurer and I love exploring new places, cultures and food. Travelling can become stressful and expensive. Over the years I have learnt to travel as cost effective as possible, simply by travelling more clever. Nelmitravel.com is a Adventure and Budget Travel site where I review Airlines, Accommodation, Transport, Restaurants and give helpful travel information.

Thank you for visiting. Have a fabulous day!
