Fashion in Moscow

Imagine you open a Vogue magazine and the models come alive and step out of the pages. That is exactly what came to mind when I saw the women in Moscow!

Russian women are beautiful there is no question about it. I was amazed to see how tall they are. They take great pride in how the dress and have a wonderful sense for fashion. The confident walk is noticeable and many heads were turning as they walked past us.The women looked perfect from head to toe. The hair and nails were immaculate. Most of them were wearing stilettos and this I found quite intriguing. How do you walk in stilettos on the cobbled stones without killing yourself? But they managed to do it!

Not only do they mange but they also walk with poise and elegance. The outfits are rounded off with a stylish coat, jacket and handbag. Don´t forget the jewellery and the sunglasses!

I had to dress up too whenever we were going out. It was expected of me. In a way I felt a strange kind of pressure. The constant pressure to look good. I love dressing up but I am not sure I could live like that every day. I have to admit it was a wonderful feeling to see the appreciation in my husband´s eyes when he slipped that coat over my shoulders. Maybe the pressure is worth it after all!

Being a woman myself, I know how difficult it is to be happy with your appearance. This is true for women all over the world. Beautiful Russian women colour their blonde locks black and beautiful Latina women colour their black locks blonde. Why?

I have spoken to a Russian woman, who is now living in Argentina, about this and what I have seen in Russia. She laughed and told me a couple of interesting things.

1. Yes, it is expected of you to dress like that. Society and your husband or partner wants you to dress up. But the most important is that you as a woman wants to feel beautiful.
2. It is not expected of grand mothers. They had their turn.
3. It is very stressful for a woman to have this constant pressure.
4. They do get used to walking on the cobbled street roads with stilettos.
5. It takes a long time in the morning to get ready for work.

It was also interesting that she mentioned that here in Argentina she only dresses up when she goes out in the evening. A lot of the pressure had disappeared since she´s been living here. But when she is planning a visit to Russia she spends hours packing the right clothes and starts stressing all over again!

The pressure is on and it is time to conform to the rules of society.

I have been fortunate to have done quite a bit of travelling. By heart I am an adventurer and I love exploring new places, cultures and food. Travelling can become stressful and expensive. Over the years I have learnt to travel as cost effective as possible, simply by travelling more clever. 1. I find this fascinating. It is a topic that really interests me since doing my dissertation at varsity on the 'effect media have on women'. Living in NZ has given me a different appreciation for dressing up. The dress up here is more about being noticed, not vogue fashion. It is wonderful to be noticed and look good – gives you that confident step. But to be under that pressure every day – how do they handle it? And why do they put up with it? Fascinating!

  2. They sure look good and thumbs up to them for the afford and time not only dressing but carrying themselves so well. For me, it depends on the occasion, at times you can want to be comfort clothes but when its required, then dressing up and looking good should be done.

  3. What comes to mind when referring to the Russian people as a whole is discipline. Going back to the amazing gymnasts, ice skaters and the Bolshoi Ballet…is it any wonder they might incorporate that same discipline into their everyday lives? The hours of fuss and makeup, shopping for looks and success, seems almost typically Russian! I absolutely loved the photos and it's a great blog idea for a story.

  4. Really fascinating.. I love that when your a grandmother your all over lol The images really show their beauty and poise.. What pressure on the ladies, every dayhttp://jpweddingphotograpy.blogspot.com/2011/06/candid-silhouettes-on-vero-beach.html

  5. Hi Kerry-ann, interesting topic to choose. I think it comes natural for them. I have noticed that when we get Russian women here at the hostel they completely let their hair down. I found this contrast interesting. I found the blog of a Russian woman who was explaining that they basically like to look good and if they move to other countries they will continue this trend for a couple of years but this time forcing them to dress down again by the pressure of society. Fascinating isn´t it?

  6. Hi Sheril, I think there are a lot of people who think of Russian women as Mail Order Brides. Yes it is true that many women don´t want to live in Russia and you need to understand the history and culture. The Western World was forbidden and when it opened it was associated with money. Many of the women believe that true happiness lies outside the borders of Russia. This is not always the truth and there are always someone who wants to profit from the whole thing. Why they are so beautiful? I have no idea! Many people believe the Latina women are hot and beautiful! I think all women are beautiful!

  12. Hi Nava, I think all women should spoil themselves and dress up once in a while. We live in the countryside and honestly cannot walk in clothes like that around here, especially when I need to clean. But every Sunday we do dress up and it is a wonderful and liberating feeling!

  13. Hi "The Loerzels", yes I couldn´t agree more. They don´t need to dress up at all! They are naturally beautiful!

  14. Hi Claire, the stilettos in Russia were to die for. I went to a market and they had shop after shop with the most exquisite leather boots and stilettos! I bought a more practical pair with not such a high heel because I would injure myself!
