Aswan High Dam – Egypt

The High Dam in Aswan is really impressive with a fantastic structure. I had the opportunity in 2005 to visit this impressive site when I was touring Egypt. This dam is huge and the view breathtaking.

Statistics High Dam

It measures 12,562 feet across, 364 feet high, and 3,214 feet width at its base and stretches across Lake Nasser. Lake Nasser is a man made or created lake. Construction started in 1960 and was completed in 1971.

The dam is very important because it generates electricity for most of Egypt. The project was sponsored by the former Soviets and a lotus-shaped monument was erected to commemorate the project. The monument is at the western end of the dam.

Interesting and complex architecture.

There isn’t much to see or do when you are at the dam. I found the enormity of this project overwhelming. It is hard to imagine such a lot of water in the desert. It was really incredible to hear how they have re-assembled everything after construction was completed at the temple of Philae.

I tried to get a panoramic shot of the dam but because it is so big it is virtually impossible. I then opted for a video clip but the quality was not very good. As far as I know you are not allowed to take pictures of the dam wall.

The visit to the dam was included in my tour package. It is about 30 minutes from the city of Aswan and we were driven there. From there we took a boat to the temple of Philae. It is a great place to visit when in Aswan but it is a once-off trip and not something that all travellers want to see. Definetely worth a short visit when in Aswan.

I have been fortunate to have done quite a bit of travelling. By heart I am an adventurer and I love exploring new places, cultures and food. Travelling can become stressful and expensive. Over the years I have learnt to travel as cost effective as possible, simply by travelling more clever.
