The Holy Cross Church in Warsaw – Poland.

This was by far, one of the most beautiful Churches, that I have visited in Warsaw. The “Church of the Holy Cross” got it’s name from the statue of Christ carrying the cross, on the staircase in front of the church.

If you are a Chopin fan, then this is definitely one of the places that you have to visit.   In 1882, his heart was sealed in an urn and placed behind a special wall. Other famous people have also been buried here including the Nobel Prize-winning author, Władysław Reymont, Polish Poet Juliusz Słowacki and WWII hero, Władysław Sikorski.

History of the Holy Cross Church.

This beautiful Church dates back to the 15th century when it was merely a small wooden chapel. Over the years the Church has known a great deal of sadness. In 1650 it was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge and was subsequently rebuilt in 1682. Numerous additions over years added to its shape and most notably are the two Baroque towers.  It plays a very important role in Polish history and has seen bloodbaths and Patriotic protests. It is one of the most important Churches in Poland.

Inside the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw.

I have mentioned before about the Statue of Christ that can be seen on the staircase. During the WWII this statue was thrown into the streets by the Nazi Soldiers. The Church was again destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt after the war. For many Polish people this church is a symbol of the fallen Warsaw that was rebuilt.  The inside of the Church is really beautiful with its Baroque architecture. .Take some time to admire all the details.

Inside the Church, you will find the largest organ in Warsaw. It was built in Salzburg in 1925.

When you go inside the church be courteous as people are praying or attending mass.

Where to find the Holy Cross Church?

It is opposite the Kopernikus Monument on Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street and very close to the University.
