What is compression socks and why use them?
Compression socks or stockings, apply pressure to the lower legs and help maintain blood flow. They are ideal for reducing swelling and discomfort. If you have problems with blood flow to your legs, varicose veins or lymphoedema. A General Practitioner might prescribe compression socks or stockings.
Long distant low-cost flights have become more popular. Although you save a lot of money on low-cost flights, it does have a downside – lack of leg space. On a recent long distance flight, my legs were swollen for a couple of days. I have no medical condition and knew it was flight related. Walking around and doing feet and leg exercises did not help a lot. A friend suggested I look into compression socks or stockings.
Compression stockings and long distance flights.
To my surprise, I found that they are popular among travelers. A traveller from Australia posted this comment on Tripadvisor:
Flying from Australia usually requires very long flights. Over here compression socks are recommended to limit swelling. I would never fly without them. As for being a pain to wear I usually put them on before I board the plane and wear long pants so no one knows I have them on. They do feel uncomfortable at first but better than swollen feet and ankles at your destination.
Compression socks are not only for elderly people. Anyone of age who suffers from swelling in the legs or ankles, can wear them.
Where to purchase compression socks?
If you feel that you could benefit or need compression stockings, I suggest contacting your General Practitioner. They need to fit and can be expensive. There is a cheaper alternative and that is to purchase a pair from your local pharmacy. Again, it is very important that you purchase the correct size.
Compression socks are no substitute for seeing a doctor and to get diagnosed if you suffer from heavy swelling. They can also be purchased online but it is a gamble, as you cannot fit them.
Tips for long-distance flights and to limit swelling in your legs and ankles.
If you decide not to wear compression stockings, please do not remove your shoes during flight. Not only is it unhygienic but you stand the risk of not being able to get your shoes back on in case of swelling.
Many low-cost airlines do offer more space at an additional charge. If you can afford to pay for an upgrade, I suggest doing it. Extra space on a long distance flight will go a long way in ensuring a more comfortable flight.
