Gdansk Lech Walesa International Airport review.
We recently traveled via Gdansk Lech Walesa International Airport on our way to Munich. It is a small but modern airport located 12 km northwest of Gdansk, Poland. I was impressed with the airport and it offers everything that travelers need. Let’s have a look at the airport and a couple of inside tips for a smooth transit.
Arrival at Gdansk Lech Walesa International Airport.
I found the lack of security at the airport entrance alarming. It is an airport where you simply walk in without going through security checks or scanners. They could definitely improve on that. The arrivals hall offers the standard services of a pharmacy, souvenir shops and a couple of restaurants and coffee shops. The check-in counters are marked clearly and information boards keep passengers informed of their flights. Free Wi-Fi is available for 20 minutes and then you need to re-connect. Registration is simple and quick with an email address only.
After checking in, you will need to pass through security to get to your departure gate. The process is simple and a standard procedure. I did read a couple of reviews on Google where travelers complained about the security control. People had to pass multiple times through the scanners while the trays move along the line and stay unattended.
To eliminate this problem, I suggest preparing well for the security process. Take your belt and shoes off before you put your personal belongings in the trays. That will eliminate the problem of passing through the scanners multiple times. Also, make sure that all your electronic goods are taken out of your bags. They do not need to be in separate trays. Keep your boarding pass and passport on you.
Proceed to the boarding gates. Boarding gates are well marked and easy to find. If you are stuck, go to the information desk. Not all people working at the Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport speak English.
Shopping and eating at Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport.
The Duty-free area is not huge but you will be able to find many shops that sell souvenirs, a pharmacy, perfume, make-up, clothes, and shoes. There are a couple of restaurants and coffee shops where you can relax. Chairs are modern and very comfortable with electricity points close by to charge electronic devices. The airport is super clean and spacious. Staff in the shops are friendly and helpful.
Transport options when arriving at Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport.
If your flight arrives at Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport, then you will be pleased to know that the airport is very well connected to the city. Taxi services are available just outside of the airport as well as city buses and train. Car rental services are available inside the airport. Information is clear but only in Polish. We battled a little bit whilst purchasing tickets for the train and a young man was kind enough to help us.
A word of warning about Currency exchange. Do not exchange money at the airport. Many people have complained that they got ripped off. It is better to change money in the city.
Andrey misplaced his laptop at the boarding gate when we were in Gdansk which is a story for another time. After a couple of days and after we were in Argentina, we phoned the Lost and Found Department at the airport. To our surprise, the laptop was there and somebody handed it in. The guy that we spoke to was extremely helpful, arranged for TNT Courier to pick it up and have it delivered. He packed it very well and the laptop arrived safely. We cannot thank him enough. Great service and super friendly.
