Lockers at the main bus terminal in Buenos Aires.

On a recent visit to Buenos Aires I was stuck with my luggage. I had 7 hours to kill in the city before my bus departed from the main bus terminal – Retiro. Where to find lockers to keep my luggage safe?

Retiro Main Bus Terminal in Buenos Aires.

VIP Room at the Main Bus Terminal in Buenos Aires.

If you travel with the bus company Chevalier (there are other companies as well) then you are allowed access to the VIP area. They have a designated place with lockers to safe guard your luggage. This time however I was not travelling with them and had no alternative to use the lockers that are provided by the Terminal.

I was nervous!

The bus terminal is not safe and many people hang around there, looking for trouble. My suitcase did not contain anything valuable,so I decided to give it a try.

Where to buy tokens to use for the lockers?

You have to buy a token at one of the Kiosks. It costs 9 pesos for 24 hours. You have to find a locker with a key, insert your coin when the door is still open and then close it and remove your key. Some lockers have been damaged so make sure you take a locker that is in good condition.

The lockers are sturdy but some of them have been tampered with. It could be by vandals trying to break into the lockers or maybe by a person who lost his key.

I returned after several hours and my bag was safe. I preferred to have my bag locked up and it gave me extra time to explore the city. Like I mentioned before, it is not a good idea to hang around at Retiro. It is really not a safe place.

Alternative places to store luggage when in Buenos Aires.

  • Manuel Tienda Leon has a storage facility with lockers but only until 12pm in the evening. They do not store luggage overnight.
  • Most Hostels and Hotels have a storage facility that is either free or paid.
