Whale watching in Patagonia – Argentina.
Have you ever wondered what it must feel like to see whales up close in their natural habitat? It is an unforgettable experience that will move you to tears. The whale watching season in Argentina starts from May to December. The best time to see the gentle giants are in September and October. We saw the whales in August and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Where is the best place to go whale watching in Argentina?
Puerto Madryn is the best place if you want to see the whales. There are currently six companies authorized to do whale watching excursions. These excursions are strictly controlled in order to prevent a change in the behavior of the whales. They take utmost care not to disturb them. This however is easier said than done because whales are by nature very curious creatures.
What can be seen on a whale watching excursion?
Boats depart from the Pirámides Port in Puerto Madryn. Excursions cover more than 2 miles along the Argentine coast. You will have an opportunity to see the Southern Right whales as well as sea lion colonies.
When the boat reaches his destination, the skipper kills the engine and a silence descends over the ocean. Everybody becomes attentive and watches the water for the first sign of a whale. It doesn´t take long! A silvery and white shape appears, a splash of water and a tail before it descends into the depths of the ocean. You have just spotted your first whale. The excitement is building as everybody is pointing and shouting. Cameras click and people speak in different languages. That moment when you see a whale up close, is something that you cannot describe in words. It is a moment that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

If you are prone to getting sea sick then I suggest you take tablets. Both Andrey and I got sick on the boat and I only took a couple of photos!
