Kaliningrad weather and climate.
It was really difficult to pack the right clothes when we visited Russia last year. To be honest I packed all the wrong clothes. We arrived in Moscow in May and we left in August. In between we stayed in the Kaliningrad Oblast but mainly in Kaliningrad.
My husband told me that I needed to pack for all the seasons. How is that possible? If we arrive in spring and stay for the summer then it should be nice and warm weather. I was totally wrong and have to admit that he was right.
Kaliningrad weather changes quickly.
I have never seen weather changing so much and so frequently. One moment you have sunshine and the next moment it pours down with rain. We made a point to always leave home with our umbrella. Many times we got caught in the rain.
On other occasions we stayed at home and didn’t go to the beach because the weather was terrible outside. Then all of a sudden it cleared up and you have a beautiful sunny day. It amazed me because I am used to a very different climate. I also underestimated the wind factor. Some days were extremely windy. In fact there were times when I felt the presence of all four seasons in one day!
Despite the temperamental weather we had a very time. In Moscow it was a different story and the days were very hot. In April 2008 when we visited Moscow it was still cold and the snow just started to melt. I was still walking around in a coat. Now it was completely different and I wasn’t prepared for the hot weather. I definitely packed all the wrong clothes.
When is the best time to visit Kaliningrad?
The best months are between June and August and I agree. Temperatures are in the mid 20`s (degrees Celsius) in summer. Then autumn kicks in and the temperature drop to 10 degrees Celsius. Autumn is from August to November. Winter is really cold and it can get up to minus 20 degrees but that is not the norm. Temperatures normally range between 5 and minus 11 degrees. I have never visited Russia during the winter and I am not sure if I want to. I prefer the spring and summer months.
If you are planning to travel to Kaliningrad don`t forget to take your umbrella. Kaliningrad weather is very unpredictable and it can get windy too. Closer to the Baltic sea the climate is humid and hot. Don`t underestimate the Baltic sun and always carry sunscreen.
Next time when we visit Russia I will be more prepared. I have certainly learned my lesson and will go better prepared next time.
