The best pizza in Buenos Aires.

Las Cuartetas in Buenos Aires, is a famous pizzeria, dating back to 1932. The inside of the restaurant has not changed much over the years and the marble counter is still intact and original.

Why is it called Las Cuartetas?

There is a legend that goes like this. Alberto Vaccarezza, one of the lyricist of Carlos Gardel, came here and wrote quatrains or cuartetas on the napkins during one-act comedies with other poets. For those who do not know who Carlos Gardel is. He was a singer, songwriter,composer and actor in Argentina. His three-minute tango recordings were masterpieces.

That is where the name of the restaurant came from.

Pizza remains a favourite in Argentina with many good restaurants.

Pizza in Argentina remains popular. There are mainly two types of pizza to choose from and Argentines are definitely divided when it comes to pizza. Some prefer the classic style pizza that has a medium, thick crust. The other popular option is the pizza a la piedra that comes with a thin base.

Personally I prefer the thicker crust pizza. Most important is the cheese.

Some pizzerias use a low quality cheese and you always need to watch out for that when buying pizza in Argentina. Generally speaking, you will find very good pizza in Argentina and especially in Buenos Aires.

A return visit to Las Cuartetas in Buenos Aires.

On a recent visit to Buenos Aires, we popped into Las Cuartetas. It was a quiet afternoon and the tranquil environment was welcoming after a long day in the city. This is not always the case and normally the restaurant is packed over weekends and rush hour.

We ordered a small pizza with ham, olives and mushrooms. Las Cuartetas is famous for the amount of cheese that they use when preparing the pizza. The cheese is literally overflowing.

The quality was still excellent. If I could complain about one thing, it was definitely the mushrooms. I was looking forward to mushrooms grilled in the pizza oven but it seemed that the mushrooms were dumped from a can onto the pizza.

We recently watched a Netflix documentary about pizza in general and two restaurants were named in this documentary. Las Cuartetas and the other famous pizza restaurant, El Cuartito. In fact we visited both restaurants on this trip. I will write in a separate post about El Cuartito and their famous pizza.

When you find yourself in the Mother city and you fancy a pizza, look them up. You will not be disappointed.
