The Canaletas Drinking Fountain or Font de Canaletes in Barcelona.

Many tourists walk right past the Canaletas drinking fountain, situated at the top of Las Ramblas. In fact, I did too. If it was not for Andrey who is a huge Barcelona football fan, then I would have missed it. Luckily I am one of the 95% of tourists who miss the drinking fountain. It is a pity because the fountain is a symbol of Barcelona and directly linked to the Football club Barcelona, Barça.

There are a number of interesting traditions associated with the Canaletas fountain in Barcelona. But first, let’s have a look at the origin and history.

The History of the Canaletas Drinking Fountain.

I have mentioned before that the fountain is directly linked to the Football club Barcelona. Followers have gathered here since the 1930’s, to find out their team’s score. Barça fans are also known as Culers. The score would be written down on a blackboard and displayed in front of the offices of the newspaper, La Rambla. They used to have their offices here.

However, the fountain has a history that dates back to the 14th century and is associated with the city’s water supply. The name Canaletes refers to the water channels of the city that brought water down from the Collserola Ridge to the city. In the 18th century, a university was built on this site – The Estudis Generals. The water jet was used to create a fountain. At the end of the 19th century, the University was demolished but not the water fountain. The Canaletes fountain was constructed as we know it now.

The fountain consists out of an iron monument with four water sprouts. They are surmounted by the shield of Barcelona as can be seen in the photo below. The fountain is crowned with a streetlamp and four arms. It has become a symbol of the city and locals drink water from this fountain on a daily basis.

Football fans come here to celebrate. if you cannot get a ticket on game-day, come here.

Where is the Canaletas Fountain situated?

It can be found at the top of the Ramblas just before it joins Plaça Catalunya. You can also find it easily when you exit from the metro at Plaça Catalunya. When exiting the metro, look to your right. You will see it. It is also very easy to miss because there are no signs and a lot of people.
