Povaroshka in Kaliningrad is an excellent choice if you are looking for good home cooked food. They have healthy and fresh food that does not cost an arm and a leg. I know it is tempting to stop at MacDonald’s or fast food places if you cannot speak the language. Please consider not to. Even if you cannot speak the language it is easy to point towards the food that you want and to pay. During our stay in Kaliningrad, I have found a couple of English-speaking people who managed without a problem.

Why is Povaroshka Restaurant so popular among Russians?

First of all they offer food that comes from the Soviet era. This is food that all Russians love, grew up with and eat at home. It is also very popular among working people because you can get an excellent lunch as a take-away. Prices are great and for the food below we have paid 300 Russian Rubles or 5 US for two plates of food.

Inside Povaroshka Restaurant.

Povaroshka is equipped with tables and chairs, an outside seating area and bar stools close to the window. When entering the restaurant you first have to join to queue. Grab a tray and wait your turn.

They always have soup, bread, fish, meat, vegetables, potatoes, rice, salads, juice, desert, tea and coffee. You tell them what you want to eat and they weigh the portions. Portions are big. If you cannot speak Russian, simply point towards the food that you want. You pay at the cashier with either cash or cards.

My favourite food at Povaroshka.

We ate a couple of times here and I always order the same food. Why? Because it is food that I love to eat. I have fish (a variety is available), potatoes or vegetables, Olivier Salad (Russian Salad) and Kompot (juice). It is more than enough and I always battle to finish my plate of food.
