The Arrayanes Forest is one of a kind in the world. It is also the main attraction in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Futaleufu Ferry boat offers exursions to this beautiful forest. The Futaleufu Ferry sails from Mansa Port and they operate 365 days a year, regardless of the minimum number of passengers. Mansa Port is the official port of Villa La Angostura. A roundtrip take approximately 3 hours and that includes the 1 hour through the forest.
If you are concerned about getting motion sickness, no need to be concerned. The lake is extremely calm and sailing a breeze. From the sun deck top you can admire the spectacular views of the three bays: Balsas, Cumelen and Manzano, with an Andes backdrop.
After sailing for more or less 45 minutes, you reach the Arrayanes forest.
Why is the Arrayanes Forest so special?
I have mentioned before that this forest is one of a kind. The forest is pure and untouched. The rare Arrayanes tree is classified as a shrub or a bush and they thrive on the shores of lakes or rivers. Due to the climate in this area, they have grown into a dense forest over several hundred of years. In this forest you will find some of the oldest Arrayanes that are more than 650 years old and more than 15 metres high.
These shrubs that to literally stretch for sunlight and over time have grown into actual trees.
The bark of the tree is called cinnamon bark and when you touch it, it is cold. The best time to visit is when they are in bloom and if you are very lucky you can see small orchids that grow in the trunks close to the ground. It is also possible to visit the forest during the winter months when it is snowing. The scene changes completely and offers a unique experience.
Don’t forget to visit the Forest’s Tea House that was built in 1933. You can enjoy a tasty meal here and buy souvenirs before you head back to Villa La Angostura.
