Information about the town Tigre and the Tigre Delta.

A little bit of information about the town of Tigre. Like I have mentioned before, Tigre is just north of Buenos Aires city – 28 km. It is very easy to get from Retiro train station by train, car or organized tours. I like to do things without tours but many travellers prefer a tour. Mainly because of language barriers, ease of travelling and being in a group environment.

Tigre is interesting. It lies on the Parana Delta and is a popular tourist and weekend destination for Argentines. I do recommend to visit it during the week. Weekends are busy and crowded.

The town itself, sits on an island. It was founded in 1820 and created by small streams and rivers. Floods destroyed other settlements in the area earlier.

Tigre got it’s name from Jaguars that were once hunted there. Europeans settled in this area and started to farm the land. That is where the port originated from. It was developed to service the Delta and to bring mainly fruit and wood upstream on the Parana river.

Explore the Tigre Delta by boat.

Tours are available with a hotel pickup and drop off. However, if this is not your style, then tickets can be purchased directly at one of the many companies that offer Tigre Delta tours.

Boats are luxury and often serve beverages and meals. The motorboats sail along the Delta where you can admire the views, houses, neighborhoods until you reach the town of Tigre. You will be able to see floating markets, water taxis, islands and houses on stils. You can also see shipwrecks along the way. It is highly recommended to take a cruise on the river.

What to see and do in the town of Tigre.

The town of Tigre is not big. There are however a couple of interesting places to visit. Start at the main square and walk towards the Puerto de Frutos. Wander the markets and buy gifts at very reasonable prices. There are a lot of fruits and vegetables for sale here.

I love this part of the town the most as it makes for excellent photo opportunities. Lunch can be enjoyed here but watch out, as it is expensive. Way more expensive than other places.

Admire the views along the Paseo Victoria or visit the Museo de Arte de Tigre. There is a Museo del Mate as well. If you are into naval history then I recommend a visit to the Museo Naval de la Nacion. Families with children can visit the Parque de la Costa adventure and amusement park. People who love casinos will have a great time at the Trilenium Casino.

I have been fortunate to have done quite a bit of travelling. By heart I am an adventurer and I love exploring new places, cultures and food. Travelling can become stressful and expensive. Over the years I have learnt to travel as cost effective as possible, simply by travelling more clever.
